We know spring is upon us in the Lowcountry when the grass turns green again, the flowers, dogwoods, and azaleas are in bloom, and the temperature begins to rise. It is also during this time of year when we can’t help but emerge from our short-lived winter hibernations and answer the call of the outdoors – beaches, beautiful weather, and being on the water.
I moved to Beaufort, South Carolina 5 years ago when the US Marine Corps stationed my husband at the Beaufort Air Station. At the time, I don’t think anyone would have considered me an athlete and exercise was most certainly not in my daily or even weekly routine. Somehow these last 5 years in the Lowcountry have inspired me to become more active and take advantage of the Lowcountry lifestyle and athletic opportunities that surround me every day. Here in Beaufort we have Kayaking, Walking, Running, Biking, Swimming, Surfing, Water Skiing, Shag Dancing, Golfing, Fishing, Coquet, Tennis and so much more. The list truly goes on and on! Getting involved in an organized sport or activity is easy and local competitions are plentiful. Just spend 5 minutes window shopping on Bay Street and you’ll see race posters for biathlons, triathlons, twilight runs/walks, kayak races, and open water swimming to name a few. If being active keeps you young the residents of Beaufort may live forever!

Beaufort River Swim:
I enjoy many of these activities, but spend the most time in the water. Coming up on
May 30th you’ll find me at the
3rd Annual Beaufort River Swim. The Beaufort River Swim is an open water race from the Port Royal Landing Marina to the Downtown Marina (approximately 3 miles going with the tide) and attracts athletes from around the state and the Southeastern US. In addition to having fun in the spirit of competition, the purpose of the Beaufort River Swim is to generate money benefitting the
“Learn-to-Swim” Programs of the
YMCA of Beaufort County. With the amount of beautiful waterways, creeks, rivers, and marshes in Beaufort every child and adult should learn how to swim.
