The Lowcountry Becomes You in Beaufort South Carolina

Keith Strawn

Two pieces of historic Beaufort come home Nov. 17.

Beaufort, SC is fraught with history. In the downtown area, it seems history is on display on just about every street corner.
History will be on display Monday, Nov. 17, at St. Helena's Episcopal Church, one of the oldest active churches in North America.
This bit of history began on Sept. 17, 1862, more than 600 miles north of Beaufort, SC,, where a member of Beaufort's Barnwell family waded into battle as a member of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, which clashed violently that day with George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac along Antietam Creek, in northern Maryland.
It would be the single deadliest day of the American Civil War. Among the 23,000 casualties would be this son of Beaufort.
Young Barnwell carried with him into battle that day a 1799 Prayer Book from the Episcopal Church.
Barnwell fell on Sept. 17. His prayer book would be picked up by a Union soldier, and be kept for almost 150 years up north.
On Monday night, November 17, that prayer book will come home to Beaufort, SC, and St. Helena's Church.
The family of that Union soldier made arrangements to return the book, although it is not yet known where the book will be displayed, according to the Rev. Jeffrey Miller, who made an announcement Sunday morning regarding the return of the 209-year-old

book. For more information, please call St. Helena's church at 843.522.1712.
